Our resident bookworm has put together her suggestions of some of her favourite books she has read this year. Having read 40 books so far this year!

Where the Crawdads Sing

There is something understated about this book, the story is beautifully told in an unrushed and slow pace that allows you to truly connect with the main characters. This fiction book is a gentle and symbolic piece telling Kyla’s story of living on the marshes and off survival. The story explores how isolation has forced her to learn how to care from herself from a young age and her resourcefulness to survive. This is simply a book that will stay with you long after you’ve read it!

The Beekeeper of Aleppo

This harrowing story is of a couple trying to survive and find light in the darkness of great lost. The way Christy Lefteri has written this is seamless, emotional and with so much character development and insight that it is impossible not to feel connected to Nuri and Afri.

Although it is a short book, it is not one you can hurry through. There is so much information and complexities to digest and get over emotionally, that I did not want to rush reading it.

Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist

Judith Heumann is an inspiration and there is no doubt about how empowering her story is for other disability activists and people living with disabilities. She tells her story in a really compelling and simple way, maybe even accessible is the word that I’m looking for.

I really wanted to read her story after reading her essay in Disability Visibility, I could tell she has so much more to say and wanted to find out more about her. I know it is only a glimpse into some of the challenges she has faced, her achievements and ultimately the world of disability activism. But what an inspiring glimpse that will really make you reflect on your contribution to the world!
