At Demelza, we believe our people are our greatest asset. Together we are #TeamDemelza; together we ensure children with serious or terminal conditions receive the best possible care and support.

From our hospices to our shops, we have a team of fantastic people who all make Demelza a great place to work. We couldn’t do the work we do, or have the impact on the lives of children and young people like we do, without our people. It’s because of their commitment and professionalism that we are able to provide a range of much needed services.

We’ve created an inclusive working environment with high performance at its heart with real focus on delivering on our vision and mission, and living and breathing our values.

We recruit, train and develop people so that we have the right skills in every part of our organisation.

Our People

At Demelza, supporting children, young people and their families is at the heart of what we do, but we need a range of skills and experience to achieve this.

Staff in varied roles from nursing to administration, from maintenance to retail – and many other roles between - are ensuring that we make a difference for those we care for, helping them to build precious memories. We recruit people with the skills and attributes needed for their individual role and provide ongoing learning and development opportunities.

Inclusion is a way of life here at Demelza and we understand that celebrating and embracing the unique differences people bring will make a creative, forward thinking organisation. Having a diverse team means we get a variety of views and make better decisions. It also helps us to understand and meet the needs of the diverse families we support. We are continually striving to improve our approach to equality, diversity and inclusion. Please see our EDI statement for further information.

Demelza has been awarded the Bronze Kent and Medway Healthy Workplace Programme award.

The programme, funded by Kent County Council and Medway Council, helps businesses become healthier places to work, and focus on the wellbeing of their employees. Not only does Demelza have steps in place to be a healthy workplace, but we’re also committed to continual improvement, and sustaining this long into the future. We believe in passion, performance and pride – it’s how we get the best from each other and deliver exceptional care and support.

Fiercely committed to quality

The families and children we help, and our supporters, deserve nothing but excellence. Each one of use has a vital role to play in providing unique care and support and we always strive to deliver a brilliant service.

By working and improving together, we can give even more families a chance to enjoy time as a family, for as long as they have.

Human is our nature icon.

Human is our nature

Because we see the person and not the condition, we give each baby, child and family member a service that fits them as an individual. We’re all human, and through empathy and understanding, we can provide essential care as unique as the person its designed for.

Our different roles, skills and experiences make us stronger. We value and respect everyone who is part of our story, from the families we help, to the supporters and volunteers who keep us going, to each member of staff.

Our sites

As well as being rewarding places to work, offering the best care for children and young people with serious or terminal conditions, our sites are great places to work. The Kent hospice, with its iconic coast, is surrounded by beautiful countryside, the South East London hospice has easy access to everything the capital has to offer, and Demelza East Sussex is just a stone’s throw from the sea. Whether you are based in our care settings, offices or at one of our fantastic shops , each place has its own character and ambience.

A safe environment

As a children’s hospice charity, we have a duty of care to ensure our people share Demelza’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. All job offers are therefore subject to the satisfactory receipt of references, new employee screening checks, verification of any professional qualifications and DBS clearance, relevant for their role.

All staff and volunteers are required to undertake regular safeguarding training relevant to their role.

COVID-19 safety

Health and safety is paramount for our children, families, staff and volunteers. We monitor government restrictions and social distancing measures are in place where needed. Some of our people continue to work from home. Please visit the COVID-19 response page for further information.

“I am passionate about getting things right and optimising pharmaceutical care for the children at Demelza, who are often on a complex cocktail of medication to manage their symptoms.”

“I’ve always had a passion for cooking, but this is by far the most rewarding job I’ve ever had. I love making mealtimes special for our families and cooking up their favourites. My signature cake is Chocolate and Banana and always goes down a treat!”
