Leaving a lasting gift: Verity's experience with Farewill

An example of our little book of legacies booklet

Leaving a gift in your will is one of the most meaningful ways you can support the charities you care about, but for many people, taking the first step of writing a will can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’ve teamed up with a free will-writing service, Farewill, which takes only 15 minutes to complete online.

Verity, Demelza’s Practical Support Transport Officer, tells us about her experience of using the service – and how she’s using her will to make a lasting difference to Demelza.

Verity says: “I’d had a will previously, but it was just one of those ones that you buy from the post office. I forgot about it for years until I saw Demelza advertising Farewill’s services.

“My husband and I used Farewill’s mirror option, meaning his will mirrors mine and mine mirrors his so there’s no dispute, and it was just so smooth and easy. It uses a tick box system, you add a few personal details, press submit and they do the rest for you. The questions were laid out very simply, and that’s what made the difference – there wasn’t any jargon, just simple questions to answer. It covers everything – even down to who would get custody of my pet if something happened to me, which I would not have thought of putting in my will!

“After you submit it, Farewill check it over, which only took a matter of days. It really was such an easy, quick, simple process.”

For Verity, everyone should have a will in place:

“Having a will is so important. It’s not automatic – if you don’t have a will then it will go to probate and it can be a very, very lengthy process. And it doesn’t matter how old you are. I first wrote my will when I was in my early thirties. People think it’s just an old person thing, but it really isn’t, and you never know what’s around the corner.

“When you write a will, you’re manifesting the support you want to provide for your loved ones when you are no longer here. You’re manifesting a secure future for them.”

Farewill is not only easy to use, but cost-effective too.

Verity explains: “When you use Farewill, it’s free if you use the Demelza code. An average will is probably £250 to £500 at a solicitor’s, so that’s the difference - and you can leave a donation to Demelza if you want to. It doesn’t have to be thousands; you can choose what you want to leave – even 0.1% of your estate would make a huge impact on the charity.

“In my will, my wishes for my funeral are that I would prefer only close family flowers, and then for everyone else to give donations to Demelza. That way, Demelza will benefit from me, and it will benefit from everyone who attends my funeral.”

No matter the size, a gift in your will can help Demelza provide extraordinary care for extraordinary children and their families. Use Demelza’s free will writing service today - visit Farewill and enter code DEMELZA2 at checkout.

“When you write a will, you’re manifesting the support you want to provide for your loved ones when you are no longer here. You’re manifesting a secure future for them.”
