Modern Slavery Statement
This statement is made pursuant to section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and sets out the steps Demelza has taken during the financial year to prevent modern slavery and human trafficking in our organisation and supply chains.
Demelza is committed to protecting human rights and acting ethically and transparently in all our activities.
Our Organisation, Structure and Supply Chains
Demelza provides extraordinary care to children and young people with serious or life-limiting conditions, providing expert clinical care and helping to create extraordinary moments along the way.
We’re there when and where we’re needed most, offering support and services as unique as every family, across Kent, South East London and East Sussex.
Our operations are based in the UK. To support our services, Demelza works with a range of suppliers and contractors, including (but not limited to):
• Facilities and estates services
• Clinical and care related suppliers
• Information technology and digital services
• Professional services
• Retail, fundraising and event related suppliers
We do not operate complex international supply chains, and the majority of our suppliers are UK based. While the overall risk of modern slavery within our supply chains is considered low, we recognise that no organisation is entirely risk free.
Our Policies in Relation to Modern Slavery
Demelza has in place a number of policies that support our commitment to preventing modern slavery and promoting ethical practice, including:
• Safeguarding policy
• Whistleblowing policy (including raising concerns)
• Code of Conduct for employees, volunteers and trustees
• Safe recruitment and employment policies
• Procurement and financial controls
• Risk Management policy
These policies set clear expectations regarding ethical behaviour, safeguarding and reporting concerns, and are reviewed regularly to ensure they remain appropriate and effective.
Governance and Accountability
Demelza is governed by its Board of Trustees, which has overall responsibility for ensuring that the charity acts lawfully and ethically.
Senior Leadership are responsible for the day to day implementation of policies and for ensuring that appropriate controls are in place. Safeguarding, ethical practice and risk management, including risks related to modern slavery, form part of our governance and assurance arrangements.
Concerns relating to modern slavery or unethical practices can be raised through a number of management channels or via Demelza’s whistleblowing policy.
Risk Assessment and Due Diligence
Demelza takes a proportionate approach to assessing and managing the risk of modern slavery. Our risk assessment considers:
• The nature of goods and services procured
• The sector in which suppliers operate
• The geographic location of suppliers
• The level of labour intensity involved
To mitigate risk, Demelza:
• Undertakes appropriate due diligence on key suppliers and contractors
• Seeks assurances that suppliers comply with applicable employment and human rights legislation
• Considers ethical and legal compliance as part of procurement decision making
• Investigates and responds appropriately to any concerns raised
Where potential risks are identified, Demelza works with suppliers to address concerns or, where necessary, considers alternative arrangements.
Contractual Controls and Supplier Expectations
• Comply with all relevant laws relating to employment, health and safety, and human rights
• Ensure that modern slavery, forced labour or human trafficking are not present within their own operations or supply chains
• Act in a manner consistent with Demelza’s values
Where appropriate and proportionate, these expectations are reflected in contractual terms and supplier agreements.
Recruitment and Employment Practices
Demelza is committed to fair, transparent and lawful recruitment practices. We ensure that:
• All employees have the right to work in the UK
• Employment is voluntary and freely entered
• Employees are paid in accordance with UK employment law
• Recruitment processes are fair and transparent
Demelza does not tolerate the use of forced, bonded or involuntary labour in any part of our organisation.
Training and Awareness
Demelza promotes awareness through:
• Induction processes for employees and volunteers
• Mandatory safeguarding training
• Clear guidance on raising concerns
Employees and volunteers are encouraged to remain vigilant and to report any concerns promptly and in confidence.
Monitoring Effectiveness and Continuous Improvement
Demelza is committed to continuous improvement in its approach to preventing modern slavery. We will continue to:
• Review and strengthen relevant policies and procedures
• Monitor supplier relationships where appropriate
• Increase awareness among staff and volunteers
• Reflect on emerging risks and good practice within the charity sector
This statement has been reviewed and approved by the Board of Trustees of Demelza and will be reviewed annually.
