Supporters cycle 200 miles across Belgium and France to raise funds for Demelza
A group of cyclists have taken on a 200-mile challenge across Belgium and France to raise money for Demelza.
Thirty people took on the charity’s Brussels to Demelza challenge, which saw their triumphant return to the Sittingbourne hospice on Sunday (13 September).
The group was made up of a range of riders, including corporate groups and two Demelza nurses, and they were supported by a member of Demelza staff for the duration of the three-day trip.
Their journey started on the Eurostar from London to Brussels to collect their bikes and begin their adventure in the vibrant heart of Belgium.
From there, the team cycled along the Scheldt River taking in the scenic beauty on the way to Ghent. They then followed the serene Gent-Bruges Canal, before arriving in the picturesque city of Bruges.
The cyclists enjoyed an evening in Bruges before heading to Dunkirk in France the following day and then finally heading to Calais for a ferry back to Dover where they took on the last 50 miles through the Kent countryside to reach the hospice.
They were welcomed back by a group of supporters at the hospice who cheered them over the finish line before they enjoyed some well-earned refreshments.
The cycling team included staff from Workplace Creations, a huge supporter of Demelza.
Not only have they just completed this challenge, earlier this year they also worked tirelessly to refurbish the charity’s fundraising office, creating a fantastic new space for staff to continue the amazing work they do for Demelza.
Demelza’s Senior Events Manager, Anna Watson, said: “Our Brussels to Demelza team arrived back to the hospice at the end of our Family Fun Day and it was a great atmosphere as they all cycled across the finish line.
“Challenges like this take a huge amount of commitment and dedication from our supporters and we are so grateful to everyone who took part.
“Our Brussels to Demelza team has helped raise vital funds to help us continue to provide expert clinical care, emotional support and practical help to children with serious or life-limiting conditions and their families.
“These events also raise awareness of who we are and what we do and are a great way for team members to meet other supporters and have a fantastic few days."
