Demelza staff join colleagues at Together for Short Lives conference

A team of staff from Demelza joined colleagues from the sector at this year's Together for Short Lives (TfSL) conference.

Around 300 people from across the children’s palliative care sector were part of the two-day event in Manchester last week.

The theme of the conference was ‘Built to Last: Towards a strong, sustainable future’ and it brought together professionals, policy-makers, researchers and families.

The previous TfSL conference was used to illustrate the many examples of innovative approaches for children’s palliative care during and following the pandemic, while this year’s event was about recognising and sharing best practice and looking to the future.

Demelza’s Deputy Director of Nursing, Dave Winch, hosted a speakers’ session, addressing the staffing and skills gap in children’s hospices.

There were also speeches and presentations from Children’s Commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza and Dr Sarah Mitchel, who presented her doctorate findings, emphasising the importance of including children and young people in research.

Professor Lorna Fraser presented early insights into her Make Every Child Count study, which estimates the current and future prevalence of children and young people with life-limiting conditions.

Director of Clinical Services, Katie Stevens, was one of Demelza’s representatives who attended the conference. She said“There were many talks and discussions that will be invaluable as we strive to do our best for the children and families who need us.

“It was inspiring to be surrounded by passionate professionals from across the sector.

“With so many determined and influential individuals working together, I'm confident we can continue to ensure the sector thrives.”
