Demelza memory-making specialist recognised for incredible difference she makes to families

Louise Cairney, Demelza’s Psychotherapeutic Engagement Practitioner, was presented with a judges' special recognition award at the annual event which took place last night (Thursday).

Louise leads Demelza’s memory-making at the Kent site, creating bespoke and precious keepsakes, such as hand and feet castings, for families going through the most difficult time.

Her role is highly skilled – you have to work fast when casting and there is a huge pressure to make sure the final piece is successful, because there may not always be a second chance to work with the child. It can also be deeply emotional work. 

Demelza was a finalist for the large charity of the year category in this year’s awards and Louise was one of the staff members who showed the judges around the hospice when they visited earlier this year.

They were so impressed and moved by her passion, enthusiasm and openness that they decided to award her the accolade.

Louise was at the awards ceremony, which took place at the Ashford International Hotel, but thought she was there just to represent Demelza as a finalist.

She was shocked to learn she had won the special award.

"It was a privilege to meet the judges and show them around Demelza and share the work I do with the extraordinary children and families we support," she said.

"Every child and family I work with moves me deeply and it's a huge privilege to be able to spend time with them creating special forever memories when time is so precious. 

"When I collected the award, I collected it for each family I've worked with which is why I was overcome with emotion.

"I feel connected to each and every family I have worked with; they inspire me to continue the work I do."

Demelza was shortlisted for large charity alongside Porchlight, The Caldecott Foundation, ellenor and Strode Park Foundation. The Caldecott Foundation won the award.
