Tony’s volunteering story

We are powered by volunteers. At Demelza, we have over 1,000 volunteers who all make an extraordinary difference, whether they are running our shops, supporting families, or taking care of our hospice sites.

Tony volunteers in our gardens, working hard to create a beautiful and tranquil space for families. We caught up with him to find out what he loves about volunteering at Demelza.

“It’s coming up for a year since I started volunteering for Demelza. I’m still a newbie compared to some of the other volunteers, who have been helping here for many years. The flexibility offered is really great.  If I want to start at 8am or 10am, I can, and I can spend the whole day working in the gardens or leave a bit earlier, whatever suits me.

“I currently do three days a week, which keeps me busy. I retired last year after 46 years at a construction equipment manufacturer. I love doing something completely different at Demelza. I’m an outdoors person, even in the winter!

“After spending my first few months cutting back the overgrown trees and bushes and sorting out the paths, I think the gardens are really looking beautiful now and are a haven for the wildlife and for visitors.

“I work with a good team and that is really nice. All the workers and volunteers in the garden have a good laugh while we get on with the work. Everyone here is very friendly, which is a big part of what’s great about it.

“I enjoy making a difference and I think it’s the same for the other volunteers too. Since I’ve retired I am fortunate that I’ve got the time to help out at Demelza. I like knowing that I am doing something worthwhile for the children and their families.

“I would recommend volunteering to anyone who’s got the time– there’s always something to do at Demelza!”
