Care Minister announces new framework for palliative and end of life care

Care Minister Stephen Kinnock speaking at Hospice UK conference

Care Minister Stephen Kinnock has announced that the Government is developing a new modern service framework for palliative and end of life care in England.

The announcement was made on Tuesday (24 November) and Mr Kinnock addressed attendees at Hospice UK’s National Conference yesterday (25 November).

Representatives from Demelza are currently at the conference, which is taking place in Liverpool this week with the theme Collective Strength, Compassionate Care.

Mr Kinnock says the framework will focus on shifting care out of hospitals and into community settings to ensure personalised, compassionate support for individuals of all ages and their families.

Responding to the announcement, Demelza’s CEO Lavinia Jarrett said: “We have long been calling on the Government to better fund and plan for the increase in the number of children who are living longer with serious or life-limiting conditions.

“As referenced in the announcement, there are challenges with practices across integrated care boards and we welcome any Government plans which address these.

“We also welcome their commitment to making sure every child gets the palliative and end of life care they need, where and when they need it.

“Children’s hospices are a vital part of their local community and have led the way in providing unique support, personalised to adapt to individual circumstances, including providing palliative and end of life care wherever needed.

“We look forward to working with the Government and our partners across the children’s hospice sector on the detail of this plan.”

"We welcome the Government's commitment to making sure every child gets the palliative and end of life care they need, where and when they need it."
