National Storytelling Week: why stories are so important to children (and grown-ups!)

Author with hare sculpture in Demelza Kent

Children’s author Alex Brooks is creating a magical series of original tales for our Trail with a Tale sculpture trail in Tunbridge Wells this summer. To celebrate National Storytelling Week, we caught up with Alex to find out why storytelling means so much to all of us and how she is supporting Demelza through her stories.

What better way to reimagine your world than through a good storybook?

“I love storytelling - reaching someone's heart and imagination, momentarily transporting them to another world. Stories not only entertain, educate, and inspire, but they also encourage time spent organically, whether alone or with people we care about. There’s nothing better than being immersed in a book. We face many obstacles in life, and a great story is the perfect way to switch off for a moment. The world would be a pretty dull place without stories!

“I’ve always had an active imagination. During my teens and early twenties, I worked in childcare, spending countless hours with children and embracing their wonderfully creative minds. I’m sure this shaped me into the children’s book author I am today.

“I write stories full of fun and humour, designed to be enjoyed by both children and adult readers. My books carry meaningful messages, which I believe is important, as picture books are a wonderful way to prompt conversations with young children who might otherwise struggle to express their feelings.

“I wrote my first book at my parents' house in Spain. Sitting by the pool, I watched an ant carrying a feather. Inspired, I found myself at their computer, writing a rhyming story about an ant falling in love with a feather. This definitely sparked the passion in me for writing. I loved everything about it: forming the idea, writing it, and then seeing my parents’ enjoyment as I read it to them.

“I remember my dad reading to me every night, always ending with ‘Fee-fi-fo-fum’ from my favourite nursery rhyme book. It’s a memory I’ll treasure forever, and I still have that book to this day. Stories are wonderful for creating lasting memories like these. They also play a vital role in helping us understand emotions, navigate challenges, and develop empathy.

“Stories provide comfort, joy, and a safe space for exploration. There is such a huge array of books out there covering all aspects of the world. Being able to relate to a character and discuss emotions through them can help all children, particularly those with complex needs.

Demelza is an incredible charity, providing vital support to children and families facing challenging circumstances. When they asked me to write the stories for the Trail with a Tale, I was truly honoured and eager to help in any way I could. It’s a meaningful opportunity to give back and contribute to such an inspiring cause.

“The stories I’m writing for the Trail with a Tale are inspired by the unique sculptures, forming lovely fables designed for children of all ages. Some of the tales are interlinked through recurring characters, enhancing the fluidity and charm of the Trail. I hope readers enjoy these stories as much as I’ve loved creating them.”

"Children learn to hide their feelings, they learn strong feelings are bad. But here, strong feelings are encouraged, strong feelings are beautiful – they need to come out."
