Are you looking for a challenge? Then Walk this Way could be just what you are looking for. This fab walking event sets off from our Sittingbourne Hospice on Saturday 11 September and, if you do the full 65km, will finish at our Eltham Hospice. Alternatively, you could walk the shorter distance of 35km.
This walking challenge is suitable for beginners and avid trekkers. We know that walking long distances is something that people need to prepare for, so we’ve put together some ideas for training to help get you started.
To take part in this event you will need to dedicate time to training. This should be about gradually improving your ability to do more and more over time, and giving your body the chance to adapt, recover and come back stronger. If you are new to endurance events the idea is to build it up gradually and peak a couple of weeks prior to the event itself, allowing a recovery period beforehand.
Wear your gear in! Walk as often as possible in the shoes/boots you will be wearing for Walk this Way (if these are very new this is important) and find a way to carry your backpack comfortably while you’re walking – this will help you avoid foot or back injuries and blisters.
Focus on keeping hydrated. When we train it is really important to keep hydrated as we often think we’re drinking enough when we’re not! Our top tip is to purchase a water bottle where you can keep track of how much your drinking and keep taking sips of water throughout your walk.
Don’t forget to stretch. Break in your exercise slowly. Make sure that you stretch before and after exercise to avoid injuries. Our other top tip is to leave your longer training walks to the evenings or weekends when you have more time to train!
Final tip - don't forget to have fun! Rope in some friends, bring your selfie stick and don't forget to enjoy yourself along the way.
Over the next few months we will be sharing more training tips and programmes with you, so keep an eye on our website and social media channels. If you would like to register to take part in this incredible event, visit our Walk This Way page today and follow the instructions.
