Millwall fan Simon is taking on our Millwall Stadium Stair Climb challenge – tackling over 1,800 stairs – to raise funds for our vital services. Football fan and head of school at Newington CEP, Simon Krafft, was ecstatic when he saw the recent challenge dreamt up by his beloved Millwall in support of Demelza.

The Millwall Stadium Stair Climb – which will take place on Sunday 25 September - challenges supporters to climb all 1,868 steps in the Den, the club’s iconic stadium in South East London. And for those whose fitness is not at the level of a championship footballer, there are other options which will suit all abilities!

Simon, who spotted the challenge on our social media says: “it was a no-brainer, the club I have supported from a very young age – my dad is still a season ticket holder – teaming up with a local charity. Of course, we had to rise to the challenge! It is such a great opportunity to come together as a school, showing the children, through our actions, what can be achieved to make a difference.”

“We hear about Millwall all of the time!” says Executive Head Teacher, Tara Deevoy, with a dramatic eye roll. “In fact, you can tell by Simon’s mood, what the weekend’s result was!” she adds. But Tara had no hesitation in accepting the challenge alongside Simon.

“I’m not a football fan but Demelza has a special place in my heart. My cousin died at seven from complications due to Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome in the 1980s. At the time, there was little hospice provision in the area so to see the vital support offered by Demelza to families that are going through the toughest time of their life is fantastic. And the care they offer is not just for the child but the whole family. I’ve lived in Sittingbourne for over 20 years and have always donated to Demelza – it’s a privilege to be able to take on this challenge”.

The school has a strong affinity with the charity, donating toys at Christmas, as well as supporting fundraising events throughout the year.

Joining Simon and Tara on the climb will be Karen Jones, a year two teacher and PE lead, Tom Lloyd, year six teacher and Holly Hendry who teaches year three – two Spurs fans and a Chelsea fan, prepared to put aside their footballing differences for the benefit of the local community!

“One thing that unites us is that we’re all Demelza fans” says Simon. And what more could #TeamDemelza ask for?

If you’d like to sponsor the team from Newington CEP, you can donate to Demelza through his Just Giving page here.
