On Sunday 25 September, fitness fanatics and Lions’ fans will put their stamina to the test as they take on the Millwall Stadium Stair Climb Challenge in support of Demelza. We caught up with Charlie, a Millwall FC supporter who’s previously raised upwards of £30k for Demelza and other charities through his selfless fundraising efforts, to learn more about why he signed up for this mega fitness challenge.
“I knew I wanted to do the Millwall Stair Climb because I’ve already done lots of fundraising for Demelza in previous years; they are a charity very close to my heart, and the hearts of many people I know. It started with Christmas drinks events at our local pub, the proceeds of which would go to Demelza, and after a few of those we approached Millwall FC who kindly allowed us (Peter Noden, Eddie Toomey, Harry Brooks and myself) the use of their facilities on occasion. We've now held two Christmas Charity Fundraisers on their grounds, where we auction off lots of prizes as well as holding raffles, and over the past few years we’ve raised around £30k; sadly, we had to cancel the last Christmas event thanks to COVID-19, but we are hopeful we can try again this year so watch this space!”
Despite this disappointing setback, Charlie and his friends have been doing what they can to keep the fundraising effort going in the meantime. The gang arranged to do bucket collections at the gates of The Den on Millwall FC matchdays after their partnership with Demelza was announced, and now Charlie has signed up for the Stair Climb as well. The fitness fundraising challenge will see him scaling both tiers of Millwall’s home stadium, The Den – making his way up an impressive 1,868 stairs in total, or about 70 times the number in an average flight of stairs!
“We usually sit right at the back of one of the Upper Tiers at Millwall and these days just one attempt of the stairs can be a tough task, so to do all of them is going to take some effort! But there will be a group of us doing it and encouraging each other, so I'm confident we'll all get it done.”
“I’ve been lucky enough to meet some of the families Demelza supports and see first-hand the important work they do, so I was really happy when the partnership with Millwall was announced. I know how generous Millwall fans can be and how much work they do in the community, and I'm very hopeful for many years of successful partnership with lots of money and awareness raised. If you see me at the next Demelza Day at The Den rattling buckets, please do dig deep and hand over any spare change you may have. I honestly cannot think of a worthier cause.”
