We are excited to be joining in this year’s Volunteers’ Week celebrations. Across the UK we are one of many charities that will be celebrating the contributions of millions of volunteers. At Demelza we have over a thousand volunteers who help us through a wide range of volunteer roles including practical support, retail, fundraising and housekeeping.
As a charity, we are reliant on the passion and dedication of these fabulous volunteers to enable us to continue supporting the children and families that use our services. Volunteers, like Des who has taken the time to share his volunteer experience:
“When I retired in 2019, I found that the one thing that retirees have is plenty of free time. Having been aware for some time of the great work undertaken by Demelza I thought this was a great opportunity to make a small contribution to a wonderful charity.
“I am lucky enough to be able to work in two locations for Demelza. Fortunately, in both cases I am working with books which is a great passion of mine. I love it and couldn't imagine doing anything else. The buzz I get from going into Demelza is something I haven't experienced for some time. Each day is fun and rewarding and although I am a small part in a big charity I feel my contribution is valued.”
We caught up with Leon Olive, the manager of our Maidstone Distribution Center to find out a bit more about how Des has helped:
“We’re so lucky to have Volunteers like Des – he is the backbone of our book department here at the Distribution Center, fulfilling orders from 26 shops as well as keeping our books and media area sorted, maintained and organised. We genuinely couldn’t do what we do without him”
Shirley Winch, Retail Area Manager added:
“Des is a much-valued member of the team at Herne Bay Bookshop, where his organisational skills really come into play in keeping the backroom tidy and organised. He has also stepped in to help cover the shop. Thank you for all you do for us.”
During Volunteers’ Week we would love to invite you to join us on Facebook or Twitter (@demelzahospice) and share your #VolunteerStory.
