Charles is a consultant paediatrician recently retired from Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. He has 17 years’ experience in clinical management including six years as the first medical director of a newly merged trust. As designated and named doctor for safeguarding children, he was a member of the Kent Child Protection Committee and Safeguarding Children Board for many years.
Currently Charles is vice chair of the Kent Child Death Overview Panel and designated doctor for unexpected child death in south west Kent. Before retirement he held an honorary appointment at Kings College Hospital in paediatric respiratory disease.
His clinical work has given him wide experience working with families, especially in the areas of life-limiting illness and bereavement, understanding the importance of communicating in an open and empathetic way, and supporting patients and families through difficult times.
Charles was a foundation governor of a Kent catholic secondary school for 18 years, chairing student welfare and staffing committees. He now serves as a magistrate in his local community. Married with three children, he is a New Zealand citizen and British subject.
