Beth joined Demelza in April 2008, having qualified as a Registered General Nurse (RN) at St Bartholomew’s Hospital (London) in 1986 and as a Registered Sick Children's Nurse (RSCN) at Evelina Children’s Hospital in 1989.
Following a move to Great Ormond Street Hospital in 1994, Beth specialised in neuroscience nursing , completing a BSc (Hons) in Neuroscience in 2000. In a 16 year career in children's palliative care, Beth has held senior posts, including Lead Nurse Neurology and Clinical Nurse Specialist Neuro Oncology at Great Ormond Street Hospital and completed a MSc programme Palliative Care for Children and their Families (passing with distinction). Following her passion for safe practice, Beth completed a MSc in Integrated Governance at the University of Westminster in 2014, with the focus of her research being on safe administration of medicines.
Beth remains a passionate advocate of safe, compassionate care for children, young people and families and says: “Many years ago, I attended a conference, chaired by Elizabeth Kubbler-Ross; where a mother spoke very eloquently about her experiences of her child dying, summarising by saying ‘I would do it all again for one more day with her’.
"For me this sentence proved a catalyst for my career and I absolutely knew at that point that I would eventually specialise in palliative care. When meeting the most amazing children and young people, I always remember those words 'one more day' and am passionate that Demelza supports the whole family in their journey.”
