Demelza massage therapist Maggie Allen has been named runner-up in the Volunteer of the Year category of the Kent Charity Awards 2016.
The annual awards showcase the hard work that charities and voluntary groups do throughout the county to make the lives of others better.
For the past 16 years, Maggie has offered professional massage therapy to the children with life threatening and life limiting health conditions who use Demelza.
Her support is there for families too, who, after traumatic hospital treatment or faced with the approaching loss of their child, may be worried about holding them. Maggie has also recently begun outreach sessions for older children and their parents in their own home, offering a compassionate listening ear and acting as a gateway to other Demelza services, such as family support, counselling and art therapy.
Lynne Clark, Demelza’s Head of Voluntary Services, said: “Maggie not only offers the touch of acceptance, she also offers a space where children and families can let go, knowing that she will be with them as the journey ahead of them unfolds.
“Like all our volunteers, Maggie plays a vital part in Demelza’s work, for which we are hugely grateful. We’re delighted that she has been recognised in the Kent Charity Awards.”
The awards were presented at a gala dinner at the Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone on 10 March.
