Robin Sumner, Director of Romax Marketing and Distribution company in Greenwich is swimming the channel later this year.
Robin is training for the epic swim, planned for September, in aid of Demelza.
Swimming the English Channel, even at its shortest distance, is 22 land miles (19 Nautical Miles) as the crow flies.
That's 35,000 metres or 1,400 lengths of your nearest 25 metre swimming pool!
Add to that, the cold, the tides, the waves, the various flotsam and jetsam (some dubious in texture!) stinging jelly fish, other sea creatures that you feel as they brush passed you but cannot see due to the rather murky consistency of the water.
Oh and it is the World's busiest shipping lane (Oil tankers are quite large!) It's like an ant crossing the M1!
Robin said: 'To open water swimmers this is the ultimate in physical and mental challenges and I am going to swim this in aid of Demelza.
'I am constantly inspired by the difficulties faced by the children and families helped by Demelza, they will be my driving force and motivation when the going gets tough - which it will!
'I have been building up to this and training for 2 years, my scheduled crossing date is early September 2010. '
