Members of the ships company from HMS Kent visited children, staff and volunteers of Demelza Hospice Care for Children, at Demelza House in Sittingbourne on Thursday 29th January. The 815 squadron have chosen Demelza as one of their charities for the life of the ship. HMS Kent was commissioned in 2000 and has a life expectancy of between 25 to 30 years. Sub Left tenant Ed Smith commented on how the crew are looking forward to a long relationship with the hospice.
Dressed in full uniform the crew began the day with a presentation by SLt Smith explaining what life is like on board the ship. He then went on to describe the events 815 squadron organised to raise funds for Demelza, with activities such as an acoustic night and climbing Mount Fuji before presenting a cheque for a fantastic £2,500 to Gerry Cassell, a trustee of the hospice.
Following the presentation, the crew were then treated to a tour of Demelza. Crew members commented how overwhelmed they were with the whole experience of the hospice and that it was lovely to see the money they raised going to such a good cause.
The highlight of the day was the landing of two 425 Lynx Helicopters that circled the hospice in military style then landed in the grounds around 1pm, originally planned for earlier in the day but bad weather in Yeovil delayed the aircraft. The children and staff were given the opportunity to clamber on board and enjoy the rare opportunity of being up close to a Navy helicopter.
James Hanaway, Director of Fundraising, said 'It was fantastic to welcome the crew of HMS Kent to Demelza and gave us the opportunity to show them where all their fund raising efforts is put to work. The children were really excited to see the Lynx helicopters and a great day was had by all.'
